Red and White in New York

American Folk Art Museum Presents
Infinite Variety
Three Centuries of
RED and WHITE QUILTS

Thanks to Joanna S. Rose who gifted 650 red and white quilts to the museum.  They were on display this week and it was magnificant.  It was the most impressive display I have ever seen.  Here are some pictures but they don't give them justice.  I went with some bloggers (Lisa from 9patchnurse) and met up with some bloggers too (V from Bubblebeans and Sharon from Grassrootsquilting).

Sharon, Pat, V, Lisa, Heather and me

V and her daughter, so adorable!

that's me at the show!

After the museum, we spent the day shopping!  Fun, Fun, Fun.  CAN YOU SAY "Exhausted"?  I was.  Absolutely tired.  Slept the whole way home on the bus (3 hrs).

Star sightings at City Quilter!

Also saw Marianne Fons but couldn't get her picture!

Purl Soho, a must see!

Purl Soho had the entire Liberty collection!  YUM!

And oh the fabric I bought, will save that for this weekend to blog about, some Kokko and other Japanese fabrics!  YEAH!

Quilting Retreat

Quilting retreat finish, 1982 reborn, see below

Me at quilting retreat

Lisa from 9PATCHNURSE

Lisa from 9patchnurse is the one who invited me to her quilting retreat.  Lisa found my blog by visiting Julie's blog where she has a sidebar listing of other quilting nurses.  Lisa found my name and looked at my blog and realized we both work at Hopkins.  She contacted me, we met and became quick friends.

My work space

Close up of my work space

Look at portable table by SewEZ.  It fits my Bernina just perfectly.  They have templates to fit most sewing machines.  The table is portable, folds up and has a cover.  I pulled it around on the wheels.  Love this table!  I also made a portable ironing board.  I padded a peice of thick wood with an ironing board cover and then I bought a TV stand for $8.50 at Walmart and used some puddy to temporarily adhere it to the stand to keep it in place during the ironing process.

Margaret my new friend

Margaret uses a Singer Featherweight sewing machine!  She loves it.  She let me use it and it was amazing.  I also enjoyed her hand quilting techniques.  She showed me her way and I was amazed.  She told me about her childhood and how she started out quilting.  Now she cooks breakfast once a week for the local VFW and she gets together with quilting friends every Thursday night to work on quilts.  They take turns quilting on a hoop until the quilt is done by the group and then they move on to another quilt.  I just loved meeting her!  She is such a dear.

Diane and her yellow and blue quilt

Apparently Diane has brought this quilt to the last 5 retreats.  They were teasing her because they told her they didn't want to see this quilt at anymore retreats and she HAD TO FINISH IT or else!  She got it peiced with the help of Ethel, a wonderful older lady who was absolutely hysterical.  I just loved her personality!

Ethel, made me laugh all weekend!

Here is one of the quilt tops I finished at retreat.

1982 Sampler made by my MOM

These squares were made by my MOM in 1982 and placed in a bag and never finished.  All were hand done in a sampler class she took to learn how to applique.  Found by me almost 30 years later with the fabric she had saved that was extra, I pieced it together this weekend!  I had her put her name and my name as the quilter in the center square.  I just love this.  Now to find a backing and start quilting.  This one is going to be hand quilted so it will take a while to complete!  To see a closer look of the blocks before I pieced them go here to my earlier post.

DEAR JANE BLOCKS
these I have pieced together

I also worked on my Dear Jane quilt.  I finished all 64 squares.  I am doing a mini Dear Jane for a wall hanging.  I only pieced 5 rows so far with sashing but I have all 64 squares completed.  I decided to re-work the triangles smaller so they looked proportional to the quilt.  I can't wait to show you them.

all 64 DEAR JANE squares

Mom update, she was moved to a rehab center today for PT and then hopefully by next week she will be home with us.  We miss her.  I enjoy working on the quilts she made.  I told there was one condition on finishing her quilt sampler....that I get to keep it!  She agreed!  Yippie!!!

So far we have lost a total of 4.6 lbs this week (gained 0 lbs) for a total of 457.7 lbs in 44 weeks!

***This week was great because my Mom was finally taken off the breathing tube and off the ventilator.  We are going on 2 weeks in the ICU.  The nurses taking care of her are as happy as we are that she is improving.  She has become the favorite of the nurses......Erika, Rebecca, Mark, Sue, Helen, Florence, Ann,
and Delores.... all are such wonderful nurses who really cared for my mom.  Today I baked a batch of cookies for the nurses and I even took a separate batch in for the night nurses (thats the night nurse in me).

Mom is breathing better but now we are worried about her blood counts.  Her platlets are not improving and her WBC count is very low.  They plan on doing a bone marrow biopsy this Friday. We won't have the results of that until sometime next week.   She is very weak, but today she had her first physical therapy where they tried to get her out of bed.  It was difficult with the help of two of the PT's they got her out of bed to a chair.  The steriods have made her too weak to bear any weight.  That will come back slowly.  Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes, it made me feel very thankful to have such great friends.

So far we have lost a total of 9.2 lbs this week (gained 4 lbs) for a total of 453.1 lbs in 43 weeks!

***This week has been difficult.  Mom has been critically ill and in the ICU, see the post below.  Tomorrow is the big day we find out if she needs a tracheotomy.  They are going to try one more time to take her breathing tube.  Last Sunday they tried but her throat swelled shut and she had a respiratory distress and CPR.  The good news is she is breathing herself while on the vent so if the swelling is down she should be fine.  The other problem is that she has been diagnosed with Aspergillus Pneumonia.  It is a fungal infection that can be life threatening.  This could be why she has been sick on and off since November.  It would make sense.  This is her forth hospitalization since November!  Enough already.  Thanks for all the prayers and support for mom....it is amazing how bloggers can come together and support each other.  It means so much.

I have managed to continue to lose weight even with all this stress.  I have been diligently packing my lunch everyday to take the hospital and I have not stepped foot in their cafeteria!  I just love Weight Watchers' New Points Plus program.  It has been working really well even without excericise so far.  I have not had time with mom in the hospital.  I really feel the inches coming off now and clothes are getting looser!

Mom, in the hospital

All of my blogging friends know that my talented MOM has been on and off sick now for a few years.  This winter has been especially difficult for her COPD.  She has been hospitalized with pneumonia 4 times.  Unfortunately, she is back in the hospital again and now she is on a vent for the first time in 5 years.  Yesterday, she had a cardiac arrest and was given CPR.  Please keep her in your prayers.  She is so dear to me and I love her very much.  Thanks for all the support from all our friends and family members!

So far we have lost a total of 2.5 lbs this week (gained 0.4 lbs) for a total of 448.1 lbs in 42 weeks!

****************This week my post for Wednesday was delayed because Mom ended up back in the hospital.  She is in the ICU and she is intubated, a breathing tube for breathing.  She is on a ventilator and the CT Scan showed pneumonia.  She was feeling excellent at the beginning of the week to the point that she went shopping all by herself without a riding cart.  She was so excited!  She told me she had not felt this well in 2 years!  She was still on her steriods and antibiotics from her last pneumonia hospitalization from three weeks ago.  Her steriods ended on Tuesday and she was sick by Wednesday afternoon.  I had to call 911 and have her taken the ER when I got home from some training at work.  I am headed back to the hospital now to stay with her all day before heading in to work tonight.  Depending on how she is today, will depend on if I need to call out of work.  Say a prayer she gets over this.  She has so much life in her that this would not be a reasonable end.  I love her so much and would miss her very much.  Get better Mom!!!
